Five Canadians Chosen for YouTube Symphony Orchestra

Victoria, B.C. - Perhaps you’ve seen her busking at the Inner Harbour. Now Victoria’s Sarah Tradewell has won a contest to be in the international YouTube Symphony Orchestra. The teenaged violist is one of just five Canadian musicians chosen for the 101-member YouTube Symphony Orchestra. Tradewell was selected from 336 finalists from 46 countries. Winners were chosen online by popular vote. The University of Victoria music student gets a free trip to perform with the orchestra at Australia’s Sydney Opera House for concerts running March 14 to 20.Sarah’s father, Alan Tradewell, said his daughter learned of her win two weeks ago. But she was sworn to secrecy until the YouTube Symphony Orchestra made its official announcement.

Other Canadians chosen were flutist Paul Hung of Vancouver, violinist Allene Chomyn of Langley, double bassist Richard Carnegie of Burlington, Ont. and percussionist Michelle Hwu of Toronto. The orchestra will be led by Grammy Award-winning conductor Michael Tilson Thomas.

Tradewell — who last summer busked at the Inner Harbour — is taking music courses at UVic with an eye toward becoming a professional musician. She’s studying with violist Joanna Hood of the Lafayette String Quartet.

Tradewell and her family moved to Victoria three years ago from Prince Albert, Sask. It was her father who first noticed the YouTube Symphony contest just one day before the entry deadline. He recorded his daughter playing at their home, then uploaded the clip to YouTube. She learned of her finalist’s status back in December.“I was overjoyed,” Tradewell told the Times Colonist. “It was so exciting to feel like I actually had a chance.”
